On Thursday, December 17th, eighth grade students were treated to a special guest speaker. Kristy King, a local author and graduate of Wilcox County High School, came to WCMS to talk facing challenges in life and how pursued her dream of writing.
Kristy told the students that when she was in sixth grade her teacher was current WCMS teacher Mrs. Celia McGlamory. Mrs. Celia helped ignite a spark in Kristy to begin writing at that early age. Ever since then Kristy has continued to enjoy writing, and as a result she has recently written her first published book, “Philip and the Mystery of the Toy Cars,” with illustrations by Uniqua Barnell. It tells the story of James and his toy cars that mysteriously keep reappearing in his room at night after he puts them away.
Kristy also talked to the students about facing challenges in their lives. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Kristy told the students that many of them already have a head start on their days as getting out of bed and getting dressed is much easier for them. She also pointed out that life is often not fair and often difficult, but goals can be achieved through hard work, determination, and never giving up.
