The Wilcox County High School Spanish Club has planned a cultural experience tour to Puerto Rico in July of this year. This trip will allow some members of the Spanish Club to experience first-hand the culture, language, history, food, and geography of this Spanish-speaking area. The trip is expected to cost less than $1,000 per person, which includes airline tickets, lodging, and groceries.
Sixteen students are signed up for the tour, along with three chaperones. The group will be spending eight days in Puerto Rico. Several activities and tours have been planned while in Puerto Rico. One of the most exciting activities for the group is the kayaking tour of the Bioluminescent Bay. They will also be taking a hiking tour of El Yunque National Rainforest and a walking tour of Old San Juan that includes Castillo de San Felipe del Morrow, a fortress that includes a maze of tunnels, barracks and prison cells.
According to Lisa Harden, advisor, “We live in a global society, and if our youth don’t see outside the neighborhood they grow up in, the world will pass them by. Traveling will open members’ eyes and make them more confident and motivated to reach outside their own environment to learn and obtain skills to take them to the next level.”
The club members have worked diligently to raise money for the trip and have successfully conducted several fundraisers. Currently, the club is taking orders for ChickfilA sack lunches for May 13, which will include a chicken sandwich, chips, cookies, and drinks. The final 50/50 Raffle drawing will be Thursday, May 19, at 2:30 p.m. This will be the last of three successful raffles. The first winner from Ashburn, who wished to remain anonymous, donated his half of the raffle, $506, back to the club to help with trip expenses. The second winner, Jessica Sutton, of Rochelle, received $683.50 but donated a portion back to the club.
The support has been overwhelming and we appreciate everyone who is making this trip a reality. If you would like to know more about the trip or would like to help us with fundraising, please contact Lisa Harden at firstname.lastname@example.org.
