About Us
Welcome to Wilcox County Schools (“WCS”). Located in the midst of rich farmland of southwest central Georgia, WCS sits approximately 160 miles south of Atlanta, 130 miles north of Tallahassee and 111 east of Columbus, Georgia.
Agriculture is the largest industry in Wilcox County, with these primary crops: peanuts, cotton, watermelons, and cantaloupes. A thriving poultry industry continues to grow in the county. WCS is the largest employer in the county with 178 employees, and the school district serves approximately 1,250 students.
WCS has a rich tradition of academics, athletics, and the arts. The lone high school in the county, Wilcox County High School, has traditionally boasted some of the highest graduation rates and writing test scores in the local RESA district.
In athletics, WCHS varsity sports have established a winning reputation, winning a 2009 State Championship in football. The school mascot, the Patriots, is synonymous with success: 2014 State Runners-Up in softball, recently hosting a state semi-final in football, playing in the state finals in boys basketball, and having a former football player now starting in the NFL.
In the arts, WCHS has repeatedly placed regionally in One Act Play and Literary, and the elementary school, Wilcox County Elementary School, has placed on the state level in the Georgia Movie Academy competition.
Wilcox County Middle School continues to achieve at high levels on the state standardized test, the CRCT, with seventh grade scores near the top of the local RESA district. The WCMS sports teams consistently place near or at the top of its region.
A small-town school system with caring teachers, WCS is a great place to learn. Teachers know their students, parents, and the families in Wilcox County. Students thrive in an atmosphere of compassion, trust, and rising expectations. The school system’s motto is: “I Believe in You,” and in every teacher’s classroom a poster signed by the teacher reinforces this fact daily.
WCHS is much like any other high school, with homecoming dances and an annual prom. The largest organization on campus is the JROTC, which hosts an annual ball where parents of cadets enjoy a meal and applaud the award winners prior to the students enjoying a formal dance just for them.
The school system is planning to build one school building to serve all students in grades Pre-K through 12 on a 150-acre site that adjoins the current campus. Innovative course offerings and a high-performing building with green initiatives within and without will highlight a learning environment ready to inspire generations to come.
At Wilcox County Schools, we understand that most students cannot learn if they are not in school. We need all students at school every day, and we need parents to instill the value of regular attendance. An employer will not tolerate excessive absences, and we must help our students understand the value of being present and being on time. We need your help, and we value your input.
Go Patriots!
